Budget & Taxes

As a result of the deep national recession, families across the country have faced tough choices about their finances in recent years. People in our community have thought hard about their priorities and tightened their belts in order to ride out the economic storm. John believes government must do the same thing.

A committed fiscal conservative, John supports a lean government that invests strategically in priority programs like public education and public safety. This term, the legislature and the Governor have worked together to cut over $4.5 billion in spending. For the first time in four decades, the State’s budget is smaller this year than it was at the beginning of the term. John is focused on finding long-term sustainable solutions to Maryland’s budget problems.

John strongly opposes new taxes on Maryland’s middle class families and small businesses. During the 2007 special session, he stood against the establishment and voted against every tax hike. In 2008, he helped to lead the change to repeal Maryland’s “computer service tax,” lifting a major burden on small businesses which would have stifled innovation and killed jobs in Anne Arundel County
